Memorial Friday for legendary climber Harvey Carter in Garden of the Gods

If you love climbing, the outdoors or people unafraid of walking the path less traveled, gather at noon April 20 in Garden of the Gods in remembrance and tribute to the late Harvey T. Carter of Colorado Springs. Feel free to climb, if you're qualified, or to admire the climbers, if you are not.

A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Garden of the Gods Trading Post.

Carter was a pioneering climber who led first ascents of many routes in Garden of the Gods and around the world. He also founded Climbing magazine and was a longtime ski patroler in Aspen. He died in March at age 81 in the Springs.

Carter inspired and assisted many climbers over the decades, including Colorado Springs resident Stewart Green, another legendary climber.  Stewart recently talked to Colorado Public Radio about meeting Harvey Carter and some of their climbs together over the years.  Listen to the interview.
