Windom Peak climber falls to his death

A climber fell about 230 feet to his death Sunday afternoon near the top of Windom Peak in the Weminuche Wilderness.

The man was described as an experienced hiker in his 40s, Dan Bender, a spokesman for the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, told The Durango Herald.

Authorities have not released the man’s identification pending notification of next of kin.

Rescue workers removed the man’s body Tuesday.

The man and a climbing partner were ascending Windom Peak on Sunday afternoon after summiting Sunlight Peak and Mount Eolus earlier in the day, Bender said.

The climbing partner said he last saw his buddy about 4 p.m. near a narrow ledge. He summited, but his friend did not. The climber said he looked for his friend on the way down and assumed he had gone back to camp.

When he didn't see the man there, either, he told deputies he climbed back up the peak and saw his friend's body below the narrow ledge.
