Stride for Epilepsy 5K draws 300
The first Stride for Epilepsy 5K Run/Walk was held in America the Beautiful Park on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, by the Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado. it was held to raise awareness about epilepsy and services available to those living with epilepsy.
More than 300 runners and walkers joined the inaugural event. According to the Epilepsy Foundation, about 1 in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy — a neurological disorder that acts like an electrical fire in the brain, causing seizures — and 1 in 10 will have a seizure in their lifetime.
About 7,000 Colorado Springs residents have epilepsy.
Jeff Wright was the top male runner at the group's first run, finishing in 19 minutes, 33 seconds. The top female runner was Nancy Hobbs, coming in at 21:47. Organizers plan to make it an annual event.
2012 Olympian Trevor Barron, who has lived with epilepsy since the age of 8, was a guest of honor at Saturday's event. Baron, a Colorado College student, broke the U.S. 20,000-meter race walking record at the 2012 USA Track and Field Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., and placed 26th among the 56 competitors at the London Olympics.
Many who participated in the race, like Barron, have been personally affected by epilepsy.
Alaysia O’Neal whose 13-year-old daughter, Kaitlyn, was diagnosed with epilepsy at 9 months old, said: “Kaitlyn is full of happiness and constantly reminds me of what a miracle she truly is to me and my family. Although epilepsy does not limit the beauty of her spirit, I always hope for a cure.”
