Durango opts out of USA Pro Cycling Challenge

City officials cite low attendance

DURANGO, Colo. (AP) — Durango has decided to take a pass on the 2013 USA Pro Cycling Challenge bicycle race.

The city decided not to submit a proposal Thursday for the race because of a lack of enthusiasm for this year's race.

According to the Durango Herald (http://tinyurl.com/d6mrdws ), city manager Ron LeBlanc blames the Pro Challenge organization for setting high expectations, telling the city to expect as many as 25,000 people. The actual number of spectators on race day in August was estimated by the city at 13,000.

Race organizers did not return a phone call seeking comment.
