Winter fly fishing lived up to it's reputation as John Kleis, pictured here, and friend Darrick Quintana braved foggy weather and a few snowflakes enjoying a morning of fly flying on the Arkansas River near Pueblo on Dec. 22, 2010. The two anglers got off to a slow start before Kleis landed this 17-inch rainbow trout. Kleis is a guide at Angler's Covey in Colorado Springs.

Learn to fly fish during free lessons

Learn the basics of fly fishing during free classes at Angler's Covey in west Colorado Springs.

The classes are sponsored by Orvis, a fly fishing equipment company.

“Our goal is to encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to come learn more about the fascination of fly fishing," said Tom Rosenbauer, Orvis marketing director.

Trout Unlimited and the Federation of Fly Fishers will help with the classes and offer free memberships to students (a $70 value).

Fly Fishing 101/201
The 101 course is one hour of casting instruction and one hour of rigging. The 201 course is held on the water, with a lower instructor/student ratio.

Students get a coupon for $25 off any purchase of $50 or more and other coupons good toward Orvis gear.

Fly Fishing 101 class dates
Classes will be held at 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. most mornings. See the Angler's Covey website for details.
