Hundreds support Girls on the Run

THE GAZETTE

Hundreds of local runners, parents, teachers, students and other community members gathered Saturday morning to complete a 5K run at Venetucci Farm and to support a program aimed at supporting young girls.

The run, organized by Penrose-St. Francis, benefited Girls on the Run, which is reaching out to girls across the Pikes Peak region. It is part of a larger program that reaches out to girls across Colorado and the country.

Volunteer coaches teach girls physical fitness through a gradually intensifying exercise program, according to a 2011 article in The Gazette. Along the way, the girls learn about having a healthy body and mind.

The girls also learn about bullying and about making good decisions in life.

As middle schooler Madison Hayes said in the 2010 article: "Fitting in isn’t the best way to live."

She said Girls on the Run helped her to build confidence, and taught her things that will help her in the future.
