Take a gravity-defying tour of Black Canyon of the Gunnison

THE GAZETTE

If you've ever stood at the rim of majestic Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and wondered "who in the heck would climb that?" you're not alone.

The park west of Gunnison has the highest cliffs in Colorado, 2,000-foot-deep chasms that make me dizzy just looking down. Local climbers Jes Meiris and Bo Parsons apparently don't share my love of not dangling in the air above such heights.

They will "share their passion for this incredible place through both historical and more recent pictures and epic stories of climbing in 'The Black'" during a free slideshow presentation at Mountain Chalet downtown Wednesday.

It starts at 7 p.m.

Here are more upcoming free slideshows at Mountain Chalet:

May 2nd: Mt. Kilimanjaro and Wildlife Safari:  Two Tanzanian Adventures in One JourneyBy Dan Heidenreich

Nature and travel photographer Dan Heidenreich journeys to Tanzania for two bucket list adventures.  Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain at 19,340 ft, is a world-class trekking peak.  Then, while in the neighborhood, he follows up the climb with a tour through four of Tanzania's national parks, including the crown jewel of wildlife areas - the Serengeti Plain.

May 9th: Easter Island/ChileBy Roger Spaulding

In February of this year, Roger was privileged to visit both Easter Island and the northern Chilean Atacama Desert.  It was one of those trips-of-a-lifetime, and, traveling with a photo safari group, Roger brought back the pictures to prove it.

May 16th: Going Celtic (Trekking Scotland)By Bill Houghton

A “Once in a Lifetime Trip” used to mean that you only got one. Bill prefers to think that it can mean once every year. With so many places to visit, it also can mean that you only see a place once and that you need to get to see everything. He tried to see everything on his trip to Scotland,  from the Hadrian’s Wall hike (which is technically still in England) in the south to the Great Glen Way and the wilds of Caledonia in the north. Along the way, he experienced one of the world’s most famous hikes along the West Highland Way.
