Climbers scale slippery mountains in Ouray

NBC 11 NEWS

Ice climbers from all over the world scaled the mountains in Ouray for the Ice Festival this weekend.

"I'm from Ohio so this is not something that I grew up doing," says Dawn Glanc.

Glanc has been climbing giant walls of ice for the past 15 years.

"When you're climbing, everything else in the world doesn't matter," says Glanc.

Except her spiked boots and ice ax, that help her reach to the top.

"You learn to focus, you learn to control fear, you learn to control your emotions, because you have to, if you don’t, you’re not going to be successful," says Glanc.

This is Dawn's sixth run in the Ouray Ice Festival, she took the trophy in 2009 and last year, but Saturday the route was a tougher trek.

“I messed myself up in the way I was spinning my legs around and I just got a little caught up in everything that was happening, it was a little over whelming and I lost focus," says Glanc.
