Campfire likely cause of Flat Top wildfire

ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW CASTLE — An abandoned campfire is suspected of igniting a wildfire that's burning in the Flat Top mountain range north of New Castle.

White River National Forest spokesman Bill Kight said the fire started Thursday in an unofficial campsite, The Daily Sentinel (Grand Junction) reported. An official cause of the fire has not been determined.

The fire has scorched 234 acres. Some 100 firefighters are battling the blaze.

The Middle Elk Fire started in the Hiner Spring area and forced the evacuation of the popular Meadow Lake campground and closure of some roads in the area.
