Search turns up lost mountain biker near Cañon City

Fremont County authorities searched into the night Saturday to rescue a lost mountain biker outside Cañon City.

The bicyclist, who was found unharmed at 3 a.m., had been riding trails in the area of Shelf Road north of Cañon City with a friend when the pair became separated.

The friend searched the route, but called authorities at 8:45 p.m. when darkness stopped his hunt.

The Fremont County Sheriff's Office brought in searchers on all-terrain vehicles who covered miles of trails through the night.

The lost bicyclist, identified only as a man from Boulder, was found hours later, cold and dehydrated but otherwise fine, authorities said.

"He built two small fires to keep warm and remained stationary on one of the trails once he realized he couldn’t find his way out of the area," the Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
