Independence Pass scheduled to close Friday

Independence Pass, the quick route between Colorado Springs and Aspen, is scheduled to close Friday, a couple of days later then the norm.

The Colorado Department of Transportation plans to keep Highway 82 over the 12,095-foot pass open until the snow hits, agency spokeswoman Stacey Stegman to the Aspen Times.

Snow is forecast Friday.

CDOT usually locks the gates east and west of the pass Nov. 7 - unless snow has already forced its closure (in 2010, that happened Oct. 25).

The scenic roadway is scheduled to reopen the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend, but that date also is ruled by weather.
