UPDATE: Woman rescued near summit of Pikes Peak

rich.laden@gazette.com

A 39-year-old woman who experienced difficulty breathing as she was hiking up Pikes Peak had to be rescued late Wednesday morning by members of El Paso County Search and Rescue.

The woman became sick along Barr Trail, about 1.5 miles from the summit of Pikes Peak, said Reg Francklyn of El Paso County Search and Rescue.

"It's very common that people who are going to have trouble are going to run into it about that area, as they get to the upper part of Pikes Peak," he said.

Search and Rescue members drove to the summit via the Pikes Peak Highway, and then hiked down to her location. They provided her with oxygen and helped her walk to the summit, Francklyn said. An AMR ambulance that responded to the incident transported her down the mountain, although Francklyn didn't know if she was taken to a hospital. He also didn't know her identity or whether she was from the area or a visitor.

"That's a pretty common occurrence on Pikes Peak," Francklyn said.

A local hiker later stated online he assisted the woman when he met up with her on the trail and remained with her during an ambulance ride down the mountain. She had run the Ascent race up Pikes Peak in the past, he stated. She was met by her husband and was not taken to a hospital, he said.
