Poster unveiled for local leg of USA Pro Cycling Challenge

THE GAZETTE

Organizers of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, the race that will bring the top cyclists in the world to Colorado this summer, have unveiled the official poster for the local leg of the race.

The poster for Stage 5, which will have riders coming from Breckenridge, through the mountains, down U.S. Highway 24 and into downtown for three laps and a triumphant finish, was designed by Ohio artist James Billiter.

The design features notable landmarks Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods, through which cyclists will race.

“With family in Colorado, I am fortunate enough to visit every couple of years,” said Billiter in a news release.  “The poster was inspired by one of my first visits in 2002. We hiked in Garden of the Gods and I was awestruck by the magnificence of Pikes Peak in the distance.”

The poster was selected from several submitted designs. Local judges included Mayor Steve Bach, Chris Carmichael of Carmichael Training Systems and Steve McCauley of USA Cycling.

The race will come to Colorado Springs Aug. 24.

A spokeswoman says the poster will be available for purchase at the USA Pro Cycling Challenge website and in Colorado Springs the day of the race.
