State Games women's 5K course records shattered in Sunday race
The Rocky Mountain State Games 5K was held early Sunday on a mostly flat course around Memorial Park. Relatively cool conditions and little wind may have assisted in the shattering of a few course records.
A new women's course record was set by Heather Bates, 17, of Colorado Springs, who crossed the finish line in 17 minutes, 34 seconds. The previous record of 18:07 was set in 2010 by Bates, then 15.
Bate also set a new record for female runners ages 17-19. The previous record of 23:59 was set in 2011 by Megan Sturges, 17, of Peyton.
A new men's course record was set by Carl Arnold, 24, of Colorado Springs, who crossed the finish line in 15 minutes, 50 seconds. The previous record of 16:03 was set in 2010 by 18-year-old Luke Arbuckle of Elkton, Mo.

Kayli Tabares, 12, of Colorado Springs, finished in 19:39, placing 18th overall and setting a new course record for female runners ages 12 and younger. Kayli set the previous record of 23:08 in 2011 at age 11.
Kathleen Kaye, 54, of Jacksonville, Fla., set a new course record for female runners ages 50-54, finishing in 21:18. She was 24th overall. The previous record of 29:49 was et in 2010 by Holly Stack, 53, of Colorado Springs.
Melanie Brim, 45, of Colorado Springs, set a new course record for female runners ages 45-49, finishing in 21:49. The previous record of 25:48 was set in 2011 by Julianne White, 46, of Colorado Springs.
Megan Leatham, 28, of Colorado Springs, set a new course record for female runners ages 25-29, finishing in 22:03. The previous record of 23:04 was set in 2010 by Kristin Homan, 26, of Colorado Springs.
Judith Russsell, 65, of Colorado Springs, set a new course record for female runners ages 65-69, finishing in 30:52. The previous record of 48:11 was set in 2010 by TJ Kittelson, 65, of Colorado Springs.
Sally Doyle, 70, of Colorado Springs, set a new course record for female runners ages 70-74, finishing in 52:23. The previous record of 56:28 was set by Mary Ellen McNally, 74, of Colorado Springs.
The park is at about 6,100 feet elevation.
