Colorado Springs triathlete Michael Weiss was the overall winner in the 5K portion of the Grand Prix of Running Take 5 in the Garden on Saturday.

The event features 5K and 5-mile runs. A total of 974 runners took part in both, down 140 from last year, perhaps a result of the near-record high temperatures. Or perhaps because there were so many other races in the region on Saturday.

The 31-year-old Weiss posted a time of 14 minutes and 42 seconds on a steamy morning in Garden of the Gods. The Austrian last fall took home $20,000 for winning the XTERRA world championship in Maui, Hawaii.

The top female runner in the 5K was Christel Aime, 39, of Colorado Springs. She ran the course in 16 minutes and 43 seconds.

In the 5-mile race, Greg Smet, 49, of Colorado Springs, had the fastest time, with 24 minutes and 42 seconds, nearly three minutes faster than the runner-up.

Amanda Ewing, 31, of Colorado Springs, was the fastest female runner, with a time of 32 minutes and 41 seconds.

The race benefitted the Garden of the Gods Foundation. The next race in the Grand Prix of Running series is the Sailin’ Shoes 5K and 10K in downtown Colorado Springs on June 16.
