Hiker killed in rock slide; climber rescued on South Maroon Peak

ASPEN — A hiker was killed Saturday in a rock slide on Hagerman Peak, about 11 miles southeast of Aspen, and Mountain Rescue Aspen rescued a climber on South Maroon Peak.

Authorities were notified of the rock slide at about 2:50 p.m. Hagerman Peak is south of Snowmass Mountain in the Elk Mountains.

Upon their arrival, rescuers found one hiker dead after suffering chest injuries. Four other members of the hiking party were flown out by a National Guard helicopter.

The Pitkin County Sheriff's Office was notified of an injured climber on the South Maroon trail at about 3:40 p.m.about 12 miles southwest of Aspen. The climber was airlifted off the mountain at about 8:20 p.m.
